IELTS Writing: Happiness

Happiness is considered very important in life. Why is it difficult to define? What factors are important in achieving happiness?

This question seems very hard for many candidates, because this is a very abstract topic. Remember that any IELTS Writing Task2 requires you “give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience”. So your ideas need to be supported by examples and it is in the body of your essay that they should appear. An example from your own experience means something that you know from your life, from your country's news or history or anything that you have read anywhere. You can actually invent examples if you need as long as they seem realistic and believable.

  • Happiness is hard to define, because people’s opinions differ greatly.
  • Happiness is a fuzzy concept and can mean many different things to many people.
  • Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being
  • It is characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

So, just ask yourself, what were the things that brought you happiness and what are the things that will bring you happiness in your life. In other words, what made you feel happy when you were a kid? What makes you happy these days? What about future? Sometime happiness is just a decision.

At the same time, don’t forget work on the topic related vocabulary when you prepare IELTS Writing Topics.
