Please be advised that your Overall IELTS Band Score and Writing Overall Band Score are calculated and rounded in slightly different ways.

Overall Band Scores are reported to the nearest whole or half band. For the avoidance of doubt, the following rounding convention applies; if the average across the four skills ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band.

For example:
L: 6.5, R: 6.5, W: 5.0 and S: 7.0 – Overall Band Score of 6.5 (25/4 = 6.25 = Band 6.5)
L: 4.0, R: 3.5, W: 4.0 and S: 4.0 – Overall Band Score of 4.0 (15.5/4 = 3.875 = Band 4.0)
L: 6.5, R: 6.5, W: 5.5 and S: 6.0 – Overall Band Score of 6.5 (24.5/4 = 6.125 = Band 6.0)

Writing Overall Band Score is made up of your performance on two separate writing tasks, more commonly known as Task 1 and Task 2.  But what you may not know is how these tasks are weighted against each other to formulate your overall writing band score.

The examiner gives a separate grade for each of Task 1 and Task 2, using the "Band Descriptors". (Task1 Band Descriptors | Task2 Band Descriptors)
As you may all know that your answer will be marked on the 4 items:
1) Task Achievement (for Task 1) or Task Response (for Task 2)
2) Coherence & Cohesion
3) Lexical Resource (= vocabulary)
4) Grammatical Range and Accuracy
The result is rounded to the nearest half mark, but rounded down if it is exactly halfway i.e. 5.25 is recorded as 5 NOT 5.5.

For example:
Task1: TA: 7, CC: 6, LR: 6, GRA: 6 – Overall Task1 Band Score of 6.0 (25/4 = 6.25 = Band 6.0)
Task2: TR: 6, CC: 7, LR: 7, GRA: 7 – Overall Task1 Band Score of 6.5 (27/4 = 6.75 = Band 6.5)

Overall Writing Band Score is 6.5

The Task 1 to Task 2 weighting ratio is about 1:2 (in other words, Task 1 contributes 33% and Task 2 66%). However, the 1:2 weighting ratio can shift slightly depending on the combination of marks you receive.
